How to navigate the maze of tiling options

The variety of options for tiling can feel overwhelming, whether it's for your bathroom, kitchen, conservatory, or any other space. However, there are a few strategies to make this process more manageable and even enjoyable!

Start by examining the space you'll be tiling. Consider how much natural light it receives, if any. Just like with paint colours, lighting can dramatically alter the appearance of tile colours depending on the light source. If possible, order samples and hold them up in the actual space to see how they look in context. Don't shy away from selecting colourful tiles if these appeal, but try to avoid ones you might tire of in a couple of years, as changing tiles isn't an easy or inexpensive fix. Be cautious about getting caught up in fleeting trends—they can date quickly.

Interest can be created not only through the tile’s colour and finish but also through the design configuration. Various design software tools allow designers to experiment with tile layouts, giving them a good sense of what works. If you're not a designer, many online platforms offer similar tools to help you visualise different tile arrangements. And don’t forget pencil and paper!

For a unique touch, try tiling up to a certain height on the wall, then adding wallpaper or paint above for a striking effect. Alternatively, you could tile the centre of the wall and frame it with a different set of tiles to create a focal point and add visual interest.

Don't forget about finishes and grouting, especially when considering the upkeep of your tiles. Will they need resealing over time, like cement tiles? Are they hard to clean, especially if the space is used by children or teens? In cooking areas, consider how easily grease and food residue will clean off the tiles, especially if they have grooves. These practical concerns can help narrow down your tile options, making the decision less overwhelming and much more manageable.

Tiling has the power to transform a space, creating a stunning finish or a captivating focal point that you can enjoy for years to come.
