Finding the right flooring - Anna Auzins - Interior Designer

Finding the right flooring

Choosing the right flooring is essential in interior design. Not only must it complement the overall aesthetic of the home, but it also needs to be functional. Since flooring is a significant investment, getting it right is crucial.

Flooring options vary widely, from wood and tile to stone, poured concrete, carpet, and more. The best choice will largely depend on the function of the room. For example, a hallway typically experiences the most foot traffic, so it's important to select a floor that resists marks and is easy to clean. Consider the age of the home and the overall design scheme to find the ideal solution. Large stone tiles work well in farmhouse-style homes or homes with expansive hallways, while smaller tiles are a better fit for narrower spaces, such as those found in Victorian homes, where they complement the size and period of the property.

Dining rooms and kitchens also face heavy traffic, so durability and ease of maintenance are key considerations. This is especially true if there are young children or pets in the family. In these areas, think about the impact of chair scraping, food spills, and constant foot traffic. Hardwood floors are often a solid option, offering both durability and warmth while visually connecting spaces.

Living rooms and bedrooms can benefit from carpet or large rugs, which provide comfort and softness. However, it's important to choose materials that won’t wear down easily, especially in homes with pets, young children, or movable furniture. Rugs can be a more affordable choice to update in the future compared to wood or tile flooring, so you have more flexibility in your selection. Just ensure the rug is the right size—too small, and it will look out of place and awkward in the room.

Bathroom floors need to be both practical and slip-resistant, but this space also offers an opportunity to play with design. Consider incorporating fun patterns or unique tiles to add character while maintaining safety.

Take your time exploring flooring options to ensure the end result is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
