I get so much joy out of bespoke library design. It’s not just about creating a visually impactful space, but also about delivering a practical solution with versatile configurations. When executed well, a custom-designed library exudes warmth and comfort.
When approaching bespoke library design, you’ll usually face two options: dedicating an entire room to the library, or carving out a library zone within a larger space.
When I’m creating a library as part of a room, it’s essential that the design integrates seamlessly with the rest of the space. The colours, style, and finishes all need to work harmoniously with the existing or planned decor. I almost always opt for a custom library unit. Sometimes this is along a single wall, but where possible, I prefer to extend the design across two or even three walls. This not only makes a strong visual statement but also clearly defines the library zone within the room.
A comfortable chair, a rug, and a side table are key elements to help you relax and make the most of the space. When room allows, carefully selected artwork can add personality, and I’ve often included features like a piano or fireplace to beautifully complement the bookcase.
If you’re lucky enough to have an entire room dedicated to your library dreams, you can really go to town. Just like with a library zone, a custom-built bookcase can wrap around large sections of the room, depending on how many books you need to house.
Lighting is crucial in bespoke library design. It has the power to completely transform the room’s ambience. I often like to install wall lights on the bookcase columns to create a soft, inviting glow in the evenings while also illuminating the books. A reading lamp next to the seating is essential, and the addition of table or floor lamps can help to achieve the desired atmosphere.
Built-in cupboards are sometimes necessary, especially if storage is a priority. If a desk is required, I’ll either integrate it into the shelving unit or place it separately, depending on the space available.
I always recommend adjustable shelving to accommodate the wide range of book sizes. And I never underestimate the impact of colour. Painting the bookcase in a bold hue can make a dramatic statement, while adding wallpaper to the back panel of the shelves introduces texture and visual interest.
