Now I’ll be honest, I am a lover of colour in design. I find I have a visceral reaction to it, and I believe it plays an incredibly important role in shaping a space. Most of my clients tend to embrace colour as well, however sometimes a client prefers a more neutral or monochromatic look. While monochromatic design can be incredibly striking, it requires careful attention to texture and detail when colour is not there to take centre stage.

Take this kitchen for example. The client wanted a masculine aesthetic inspired by the finishes of a professional kitchen. To prevent the space from feeling dull or flat, we introduced subtle prints and layered textures to ensure it still had a strong visual impact.

We chose a dark grey for the cabinetry, one with warm undertones and plenty of depth. It is important not to underestimate grey, as it spans a wide and nuanced spectrum. To balance this, we selected lighter floor tiles with a gentle texture, adding contrast and visual interest.

The use of mixed metals, with stainless steel countertops paired with square bronze handles, adds dimension and reinforces the industrial feel. We also echoed the angular lines of the space in the window blind, creating a feature that, while not colourful, remains visually engaging.
