Millennial Grey – Is It a Bad Thing?

The phrase “millennial grey” has been bandied around lately, suggesting a generation seemingly repelled by the idea of colour in their homes and drawn instead to varying shades of grey, white and black. With huge popularity on platforms like TikTok, this aesthetic appears to have the younger generation in a muted chokehold. But is that necessarily a bad thing?

Looking back at previous decades of the 80s and 90s, interior colours could not have been more antipodal. Inspired by pop culture and the music of the time, the 80s embraced bold, vibrant shades such as neon, pink and teal, used in colour-blocking and strong contrast to their surrounding fabrics. The 90s took a more subdued turn, favouring softer tones and clean lines, seemingly to run as far away from the excesses of the previous decade as possible. Despite this, clips from old 90s decor shows, like the American interior design programme Decorating Cents, have resurfaced on social media. Many viewers have been left appalled by what now feels like a chaotic mashup of muted yet still gaudy colours, mixed with questionable texture techniques.

Perhaps these past design missteps left a generation scarred by the foibles of past colourful design choices, wary of bold choices and retreating into the comforting arms of grey. But grey should not be dismissed. It can be a wonderful choice when used thoughtfully. The key lies in what you pair it with. If you are choosing grey or neutral tones, texture is essential, even for those minimalists out there. Grey also makes an excellent backdrop for colourful accents. If you are starting to dip a toe into the world of colour, but are feeling tentative, start with accessories such as cushions or painted furniture that are easy to swap out or repaint if you get tired of them. And do not underestimate the power of a small cloakroom. It is the perfect space to experiment with bold wallpaper. Since it is used less frequently, you are less likely to tire of it, and guests will marvel at your adventurous style.

So, to millennials I say: grey is great. But do not let the design disasters of the past keep you from discovering the vibrant and joyful world of colour.
