Impressive libraries.
WIMBLEDON VICTORIAN
The two front rooms of this double-fronted Victorian house serve as home offices to a professional couple, showing that workspaces can be colourful and comfortable as well as practical.
The rooms are home to their immense library, and also provide a place to display treasured artwork.
the brief
Each of these rooms is a work environment, however the couple didn’t want them to look like commercial offices. Colour and style were paramount, with space for books also a priority.
They wanted to retain the feel of a comfortable sitting room while still having the necessary infrastructure for work.
THE WHY
These two rooms were the last ones we worked on in this substantial family home; the entire house had been completely renovated a few years earlier. The family has an immense collection of books, so space for those was a priority, but they wanted to also keep the warmth of the fireplaces, and to have comfortable seating rather than just desks. These are the first rooms that can be seen when entering the house, and we needed to be clear that this was a family home first, with workspaces cleverly incorporated into the whole.
THE OUTCOME
Two colourful, comfortable rooms — one feeling like a library, with floor to ceiling bookcases on three walls, the other evoking a cozy sitting room with a working fireplace. The painting over the fireplace was the starting point for a vibrant colour scheme, and tactile fabrics bely the rooms’ true function. Stylish furniture with warm brass accents was chosen for storage to create the feel of a wonderful sitting room rather than a hard-working office.
