This family home needed an update for the now family of six! Crucially, what was most needed was a large open plan double sized living area to serve as both a fun and formal space.
This is where the whole family can spend time together as well as allowing children to play and adults to entertain simultaneously. The kitchen and conservatory easily accommodate everyone, and luxurious fabrics bring it all together!
the brief
A generous detached house in a leafy West Wimbledon street had all the makings of a fabulous family home, however the large ground floor rooms lacked a clear identity and function. The family of six wanted to spend time together without being in each other’s way, and while there was the necessary floor space, it wasn’t configured to work for their lifestyle. The tired kitchen also needed to be updated to cater for the needs of both family life and entertaining.
THE WHY
Long, narrow rooms are particularly challenging; a great advantage was wonderful north-south light, however that also meant that a cohesive scheme and choice of materials needed to work in both bright and muted sunlight. The very generous space lacked storage, and the challenge was how to arrange everything to allow both adults and children, as well as their guests, to take full advantage of the large room while also creating an intimate feel.
THE OUTCOME
Effectively two living rooms were created; one with a large, playful modular sofa in the TV area, and more formal furniture on the other side. Many bespoke items were used, including a sofa specially built to fit in the curved bay window, French-inspired tables with drawers made to fit exactly below the side windows, framed by striped silk curtains. A 4-metre bespoke storage unit houses their extensive record collection and anchors the room. The green kitchen with a bespoke breakfast area invites the outside in!
