In many of our projects, we work with couples, whether they are buying their first home, accommodating a growing family, or settling into a retirement residence. Regardless of whether they are new to living together or have shared many years, it's common for each partner to have different interior design preferences.

During the initial design consultation, my goal is to understand each client’s personality, likes, and dislikes, as well as how they go about their daily lives. For example, is one a morning person while the other thrives in the evening? Does one enjoy classical music while the other prefers jazz? Does one drink coffee in the living room in the morning, while the other favours tea in the kitchen? By gaining insight into their daily routines and preferences, we can then explore colours, trends, and styles. 

Often, there are more overlaps than clients expect, which can serve as excellent starting points. Perhaps they both appreciate dark wood tones or pastel wall colours, or they may be drawn to a particular era. Once we identify these common threads, we move on to their individual tastes. A skilled designer will harmoniously blend these varying styles. We revisit the colour palettes and look at which colours in these palettes complement each other? If one client prefers a minimalist look while the other favours mid-century design, we could incorporate mid-century pieces while maintaining a space with clean lines, minimal accessories and a palette to enhance this.

Combining different styles can be a thrilling challenge, resulting in a unique and eclectic space. It’s essential that both partners feel at home in the final design, and as an interior designer, my job is to fulfil this brief.
