Space for everyone.
EARLSFIELD FAMILY HOME
The house was carefully extended into the garden, transforming a space that had a pokey kitchen and awkward dining room into through flowing space that gave consideration to the needs of all family members.
Positioning the kitchen centrally makes it the heart of the home, with the more formal front room on one side and the childrens' play area on the other.
the brief
This professional couple with two small children wanted to extend their home to get the best of both worlds — an area for the adults to retreat to as well as space for the children to play, all working with a new kitchen. In addition they had specific pieces of furniture that we needed to accommodate, and we also needed to make sure that the light into the centre of the house wasn’t blocked.
THE WHY
Traditional room layouts weren’t working for this family; having the front room and back room together with the kitchen at the back didn’t give the flexibility they needed and also didn’t allow for their treasured items to fit properly. They didn’t want a completely open plan ground floor, neither did they want to fully seal off any spaces. The flow of one space into another was important, as was direct access to the garden so that the children use both indoor and outdoor areas easily.
THE OUTCOME
Positioning the kitchen in the middle, using glazed pocket doors to the front room and having the new extension fully accessible to the garden was the solution. We worked with the architects to ensure that specific pieces of furniture would fit, a broken plan layout was created and careful attention was paid to the lighting to ensure a warm atmosphere throughout. A muted colour palette unifies all three spaces giving maximum flexibility; each area can be used separately or all work together. The garden makes a fourth area, truly giving them the best of all worlds.
