Perfect bed: how to choose yours

Sweet dreams with the perfect bed

Your bed is where you start and end every single day. It's your retreat, your comfort zone, your place to recharge. So when it comes to choosing a new one, you want to get it absolutely right. This isn't a quick decision. It's an investment in your wellbeing, and it deserves proper thought.

Let's walk through exactly how to find your perfect bed, step by step.

Measure your space (then measure again)

Before you fall in love with that gorgeous king-size four-poster, you need to know it'll actually fit. Measure your bedroom carefully. Then measure again. You need space for the bed itself, plus room for bedside tables, opening doors and moving around comfortably.

Here's a trick that really works: grab some string and mark out the bed's dimensions directly on your floor. Walk around it. Open the wardrobe doors. See how it feels. This simple step gives you a much clearer picture than numbers on paper ever could.

Test mattresses in person

Now for the fun part. Get yourself to a showroom and actually lie down on some mattresses. Seriously. Spend time on each one. You wouldn't buy shoes without trying them on, and this matters so much more.

One of my favourite brands is Button & Sprung, which offers an excellent range of mattresses to test in their showroom. They even offer split mattresses where each side has a different firmness level. Perfect if you and your partner have different preferences. No more compromise on comfort.

Pay attention to what the mattress is made from, how long it should last and what warranty comes with it. A quality mattress typically lasts around ten years, so this research is time well spent.

Choose storage that works

Once you've nailed the mattress, think about how your perfect bed can work harder for you. Divan beds with built-in storage are brilliant for smaller bedrooms. Those drawers underneath can swallow up spare bedding, out-of-season clothes or anything else that needs a home.

Storage doesn't mean sacrificing style, either. Many beautiful bed designs incorporate clever hidden compartments that keep your space looking clean and uncluttered.

Pick a headboard with personality

Your headboard sets the tone for the entire room. A tall design can fill an empty wall beautifully and create a real focal point. Upholstered headboards bring softness and a touch of luxury. They feel wonderful to lean against when you're reading in bed, too.

Wooden headboards offer sleek, contemporary elegance. They work brilliantly in modern spaces and age beautifully. Metal frames lend a more traditional or industrial vibe, depending on the finish you choose.

Whatever style speaks to you, make sure the colours and materials complement your existing furniture. Your bed shouldn't feel like it's been dropped in from another room entirely. According to the Royal Institute of British Architects, cohesive design choices create spaces that feel more restful and harmonious.

Avoid the pitfalls

Here's something to watch out for: bed ledges that stick out too far. Yes, they look elegant in photos. But in real life? They're toe-stubbing hazards waiting to happen, especially in the middle of the night.

Think about how you'll actually move around the bed. Can you make it easily? Will you be constantly navigating awkward corners? Your perfect bed should make life easier, not harder.

The same goes for overly ornate footboards. They might look stunning, but if they make getting in and out of bed a gymnastics routine, they're not right for your home. Function and beauty should work hand in hand, as we explore in our interior design blog.

Add the finishing touches

Once your beautiful new bed is in place, it's time for the details that make it truly yours. Cushions and throws aren't just decorative. They're the elements that transform a bed from a piece of furniture into an inviting sanctuary.

Layer textures and colours that make you happy. Mix patterns if that's your style, or keep it simple and serene. The Good Housekeeping Institute recommends changing your soft furnishings seasonally to keep your bedroom feeling fresh.

These finishing touches pull the whole look together. They create that cosy, welcoming feeling that makes you actually look forward to bedtime. And isn't that what your perfect bed should do? Give you a space where you can truly unwind, recharge and wake up ready to face the day.

Take your time with this decision. Visit showrooms. Try things out. Ask questions. Your perfect bed is out there, and when you find it, you'll know. Sweet dreams await.
