Redesigning a space—whether it's a few elements in a room or a full home renovation—can be a daunting task for many homeowners. When you factor in the logistics, sticking to a budget, and ensuring that your style choices are right, it can quickly become overwhelming.
The role of an interior designer encompasses many aspects, one of which is helping clients discover the style that best suits them and then bringing that vision to life. It's also essential to avoid clinging to fleeting trends, ensuring the design stands the test of time. When I work with new clients, I often help them discover their distinct personal style through a variety of methods.
First, I start by having a conversation about their daily routine. I ask questions about where they spend most of their time, what their lifestyle is like, and even what music they listen to. From this initial discussion, I can get a better sense of their personality and, in turn, gain insight into what styles might complement their lifestyle.
Next, I use a trusted technique where I provide clients with a selection of magazines and ask them to choose elements that resonate with them, as well as what they strongly dislike. Along with any online images they’ve collected, this exercise is an excellent way to uncover the foundation of their style preferences. It helps identify favourite colours, preferred textures, and ideal furniture styles—allowing us to narrow down the design direction. We also consider less tangible elements such as symmetry.
From there, we move to creating a mood board and 3D models, which help the client visualise how everything will come together in the space. The process remains collaborative until the client is completely satisfied with the choices. Then, we move on to ordering and project planning.
A good designer ensures the design process is as seamless as possible, guiding you to discover your perfect style and create the dream space you've always envisioned.
