This stairwell called for a confident injection of colour and personality. With neutral tones on the walls and banister, the space felt calm but lacked a focal point. The brief was to transform the back wall into something that would immediately draw the eye while enhancing the overall sense of height and openness.
We began by exploring tapestries and ready made artwork, but many options either fell short aesthetically or exceeded the project budget. This led us to consider a more creative and flexible solution. Instead of sourcing a finished piece, we chose to work with fabric to create something entirely bespoke.
The design centres around Cabrera Stripe by Jane Churchill in the Multi colourway. Its bold yet balanced palette offered exactly the right combination of vibrancy and cohesion. By adding a carefully selected trim, we were able to elevate the fabric into a refined, art like installation. Creating the piece in house gave us complete control over the final proportions, ensuring it fit the wall perfectly while making the most of the vertical space.
The stripe pattern plays an important role in the overall effect. By drawing the eye upward, it enhances the perceived height of the stairwell and contributes to a more open and airy feel. This subtle visual trick allows the feature to feel both impactful and harmonious within the architecture.
To complete the scheme, we introduced a soft chandelier. Its understated design provides a layer of elegance and warmth without competing with the statement wall. Instead, it complements the feature, adding depth and softness to the overall composition.
The result is a striking and characterful stairwell that leaves a lasting impression. By thinking creatively and working with materials in an unexpected way, we achieved a design that delivers maximum impact without breaking the bank.
