This project has a beautiful background -- on downsizing, the family were eager to keep beloved favourites from their old home, as well as to have a new house that has updated hints from their history.
Much of furniture was reupholstered for the new home - in particular the beautiful raspberry wool chair in the living area, once a dark leather chair bought by the family in the early 90s. The chair now looks and feels better than ever! Practical and durable striped fabric revived the dining chairs as well.
the brief
A thorough renovation was on the cards for this terraced house— the ground floor in particular was to be completely rebuilt, with an extension, new kitchen and cloakroom. Practicality was paramount — we need to make sure that laundry facilities and coat storage were also included without interrupting the flow of space. Existing furniture was to be combined with new acquisitions to create an easy and colourful home for the family.
THE WHY
Downsizing always presents challenges, and this house offered the opportunity to create a design that suited the family perfectly, ensuring that a move to a smaller property felt like an improvement.
THE OUTCOME
The house now has a seamless flow of space from the front door to the garden, without being too open. The cloakroom, laundry facilities and coat storage are discreetly tucked away in the centre of the house, and the large kitchen island divides the living space from the kitchen without impeding access to the outdoors. Details such as the polished iron register grate add character and bespoke joinery means that everything fits perfectly.
