We gave a huge amount of character to this previously lacklustre post-war home, to suit the energetic family living there! The large extended conservatory was built to bring the outdoors in and to flood the property with natural light. The room and furniture arrangement allows seamless circulation from room to room. Wood flooring was laid throughout, classic fireplaces installed and bright colours chosen to breathe life into the home.

As a juxtaposition to the colour downstairs, we made the master bedroom a calming, neutral haven.

the brief

This was home to a busy family with three small children, which was to see them through all their school years — the house needed to be flexible to cope with both very young children at first, and the needs of teenagers later. A working-from-home space was needed as well, even before this became very popular. And a master sanctuary at the top of the house!

THE WHY

This was a post-war house, built after bombs had dropped on the area, and had been used as a vicarage — it boasted a good-sized study in addition to large living space and bedrooms. The house lacked any particular character, however, and had been worked on by a developer before the family bought it, so their tenure there began with something quite uninspiring. It did have what couldn’t be changed — a fabulous location and large garden, so we set to creating the place that they really wanted to come home to!

THE OUTCOME

A colourful and comfortable home that meets the family’s needs perfectly — the large conservatory flooded the house with light, classic details such as fireplaces were added and strong colours gave definition and character. Bespoke joinery throughout ensured that storage and work needs were met, and that the rooms would serve the needs of a growing family for many years to come.
