Creating a cosy home is often a key priority for homeowners when working with a designer. While aesthetics are, of course, essential, they must also contribute to the overall mood and feel of the space.
Cosiness can mean different things to different people. For some, it’s about being surrounded by richness and abundance—think patterned fabrics, ornaments, and dark wood tones that create a sense of comfort and satisfaction. For others, a cosy space might involve light woods, clean lines, and minimal accessories that evoke calm and clarity. Ultimately, cosiness is about feeling completely at peace in your surroundings.
Once we’ve consulted with the client, we begin to explore the colours, textures, and patterns that resonate with them. The layout of the room is carefully planned to allow for easy movement, and natural light sources are assessed to ensure they are maximised. Floor coverings can have a significant impact on the sense of cosiness. While carpet is often a go-to for warmth and comfort, it may not always be practical. In spaces with wood flooring, selecting the right shade is crucial, and a thoughtfully chosen rug can greatly enhance the feeling of cosiness.
Lighting is perhaps one of the most important elements in creating a cosy atmosphere. A well-considered lighting plan allows a space to transition smoothly from day to night. Table and floor lamps can soften the space, as overhead downlights can sometimes feel too harsh for relaxing moments. In kitchens, under-cabinet, pendant, or floor-level lighting can contribute to a warm, inviting ambience when bright overhead lighting isn’t needed. Wherever possible, warm-toned lighting is preferable to maintain a soft and soothing environment.
Finally, accessories such as plants and artwork add the finishing touches, helping to personalise the space and create the ultimate sense of cosiness.
