I recently had the pleasure of having lunch with Charlotte from @themonkeypuzzletree. My aim was to better understand the process behind her designs and production of her wonderfully unique wallpapers and fabrics.
For me, the story and craftsmanship behind the materials that go into a design are just as important as the finished product itself. Understanding the fibres, dyes, printing techniques, and manufacturing processes helps build a clearer picture of how a product should be used, why it sits at a particular price point, and ultimately allows you to speak about it with confidence when presenting it to a client.
The same is true of the creative process. Talking with Charlotte, I gained a real appreciation for the time, skill, and attention to detail involved in producing a single piece of printed fabric. From perfecting colour palettes and collaborating with local artists to preparing artwork for print and ensuring patterns align seamlessly, every stage requires care and expertise.
The same principle applies across many areas of design. A piece of furniture may be handcrafted by a local carpenter, with each timber species chosen for its unique qualities. An artwork may be inspired by a deeply personal story or a particular place. These details matter. They give an object character and authenticity, and they help clients connect with what they are buying. They also provide something meaningful to share when someone admires a piece in their home, while offering the satisfaction of supporting local makers and independent creatives.
Stories create emotional connections that elevate an item beyond its practical function. In a world where AI is rapidly changing the creative landscape, it feels more important than ever to value and support the people who pour their skill, experience, and passion into making something truly original.
