Remote interior design can present unique challenges, but with the right tools and processes, it is entirely possible to achieve a beautiful and successful result.
While I typically work within a certain radius to allow for quick site visits when needed, I have also designed projects for clients living abroad. Regardless of location, my role remains the same: to oversee the project from concept to completion, ensuring the design brief is fulfilled and the finished space reflects the client’s vision.
Regular communication is key to the success of any remote project. Video calls allow us to meet frequently, discuss progress, and make decisions together. Although I always enjoy presenting fabric and wallpaper samples in person, when that isn’t possible, I share them during video meetings so clients can gain the clearest possible impression of colours, textures, and patterns.
The initial design phase is also easily adapted for remote collaboration. Rather than browsing through physical magazines, clients can share inspiration through Pinterest boards and online images, helping me understand their style preferences, aspirations, and dislikes from the outset.
To bring the design to life, I create detailed mood boards and 3D SketchUp drawings, allowing clients to visualise the finished space before implementation begins. I also provide links to all recommended furniture, lighting, and accessories, making the selection process straightforward and transparent.
One recent project perfectly demonstrates how successful remote design can be. Our client was based in France and wanted to create a welcoming London base where they could stay while visiting their children. We were commissioned to redesign a beautiful property in Wimbledon, managing every aspect of the project from a distance.
Regular Zoom meetings ensured the client remained fully informed and involved throughout the process, while our team was on hand locally to coordinate tradespeople, oversee installations, and manage deliveries as required. This combination of remote collaboration and on-the-ground project management allowed everything to run smoothly, despite the geographical distance.
The result was a calm, elegant and beautifully finished home, ready for the client to enjoy from the moment they returned to the UK.
With years of experience and a carefully managed design process, distance need never be a barrier to creating a home that is both beautiful and functional.
