A re-configured living room and utility room
VIBRANT WIMBLEDON RENOVATION
A previously cramped kitchen and hardly used dining room were merged to create a wonderfully versatile and desirable space, which is now the heart of the home.
the brief
We were asked to solve the dilemma of what to do with the back reception room of this Victorian terrace, which had become a dark space without a clear role, as so often happens when an extension is added to the back of the house. At the same time we were asked to completely reinvigorate the front room to become where the family gathered each evening after the working day was finished. Looking the ground floor as a whole, we realised that dividing the back room in order to create an area for the piano in the front room and turning the rest into a new utility room would transform how the family would be able to use all the rooms, and free up other storage space as well.
THE WHY
The existing front room already had wonderful proportions and beautiful light; adding the additional space allowed the piano to be moved to what is a more appropriate location both for the pianist and the audience. Creating the utility room consolidated the practical necessities and storage space, as the cupboards could go all the way to the ceiling, and excellent lighting banished the dark. Strong, vibrant colours and in the new front room are both modern and cozy.
THE OUTCOME
Vibrant colours and an extremely practical floor plan have transformed both the house and how the family can live. In the front room, ultra-comfortable seating arranged for easy conversation, a new woodburner and soft lighting is a magnet for everyone each evening, and the large, light utility room creates order and keeps everything in one place, further simplfying family life. The new layout fits in perfectly with existing features, we were even able to match the floor to what was already in the hallway. A wonderful bonus is that other areas of the house now also work better because of how well the newly reconfigured rooms work.
