Wimbledon Town House

A hard-working family home.

WIMBLEDON TOWN HOUSE

Multifunctional

Space

This family home has to deliver a lot -- two adults and two teenagers use all the space for working, relaxing and entertaining. Even the radiator boasts a bespoke cover with a cabinet above, cleverly utilising what might have otherwise been dead space. The glass doors between the main rooms can be closed, creating separate zones if needed without cutting light. The distinctive kitchen splashback echoes the colour of the feature radiator in the dining room, and the same flooring is run throughout for continuity.

Vibrant curtains draw the eye to the garden, and the pendant lights over the table rise and fall for added flexibility.

the brief

We were called in to breathe new life into this family home, which needed a complete overhaul of the ground floor. The house is typical of its area, a terrace on a leafy residential street with the typical front and back rooms, and an awkward kitchen with an assortment of cupboards which weren’t using the space well. They had decided against an extension, and thus our mission was to make the existing space light, bright, open and multifunctional.

THE WHY

The house was tired, having been home to a family with small children who were growing up fast — the space needed to be reconfigured to suit their lifestyle and an injection of colour and style was required! Their needs had also changed, as both parents now frequently worked from home, and teenagers needed extra space for both homework and having friends round. As keen cooks, having the facility to turn out delicious meals for family and friends was also a priority.

THE OUTCOME

A natural flow was created between all the spaces, eliminating unnecessary obstacles and making everything seem larger and lighter. Removing the awkward cupboards in the kitchen area allowed us to create a spacious kitchen with excellent storage and workspace and using rise-and-fall pendants over the table lets them be pushed up when the table is moved.

Complementary colours give vibrant energy, and a carefully chosen silk and wool rug is artwork on the floor of the living space, pulling everything together.
