MAGICAL BOYS ROOMS
A clever built in bed/wardrobe/bookshelf makes the most of this uniquely shaped bedroom, and provides a cabin for a boy to escape too.
There is ample storage, both in the drawers beneath the bed and even more hidden further under the bed. The leather handles provide the finishing touch and the moose keeps a watchful eye on everything!
the brief
This tall terraced house had unusually shaped bedrooms; we were to create a bedroom for a boy that was to last him throughout his school years and beyond, in a unique space at the top of the house. Storage for toys and books was also needed, as well as for clothes. We needed to think of his needs now, as well as what they would be in the next decade.
THE WHY
Flexible spaces for children are important — they need a space to call their own, where they can indulge their passions for, for example, their favourite football club. Their needs will change every year as they grow, and their rooms need to both reflect and accommodate this. And the need to have parity with siblings can also come into play!
THE OUTCOME
We designed this bespoke cabin bed to fit exactly into one end of the room; the bed is a double size, which will accommodate a growing boy. Three drawers underneath provide accessible storage, and there is an additional compartment under the bed for items that aren’t needed that often. Shelves at one end allow for changing favourite items, and a tall wardrobe provides both storage and acts as a headboard. The wood-panelled wallpaper and leather drawer handles create the feel of a cabin into which he can retreat each day.
